With the rise and popularity of Bitcoin and the emergence of altcoins in recent years, the platform in which people perform trading operations and transactions have also gained prominence.
A high number of traders and investors use centralized exchanges to do that. These ecosystems are governed by a third party and require strict identification policies. Many of them have also been subject of terrifying hacking attacks that have left users in the dust.
That’s why, in the last few years, decentralized exchanges (Dex) have been increasing in quantity. These platforms let people engage in digital currency trading without relying on a third party to hold their funds.
Actually, more than 200 Dex are currently up and running as an option for users that prefer their assets to be managed under the previously mentioned conditions. Decentralized exchanges are trustless systems that don’t hold customers’ funds and don’t need to do the same with their data, either.
If you want to know the 200+ decentralized exchanges, there is a GitHub repository named “Index,” created by Hanni Abu, Steven Hatzakis, Manfred Karrer and Elio Osés, that provides all the needed information.

Top decentralized exchanges:
- Stellar DEX: It is a cryptocurrency and blockchain project that focuses on facilitating payments between peers. The DEX has been around since 2017, although Stellar as a token was launched in 2014. Stellar DEX supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, as well as some fiat currencies such as the US Dollar, Japanese Yen, Hong Kong Dollar, and Chinese Yuan.
- Bancor: It is a protocol that prioritizes simplicity and liquidity. It doesn’t implement the usual DEX model that involves the use of P2P transactions to match sellers and buyers. It is one of the biggest trading platforms of the moment.
- Bisq: The Bisq platform supports 126 cryptocurrencies as well as other fiat payment options, is fully decentralized, and implements TOR for privacy & security. It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux.
- IDEX: It deals in Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, with hundreds of trading pairs. It is another fully decentralized exchange, with more volume than Etherdelta. IDEX uses smart contract for transactions and to manage user keys.
